R5: Little wind, at least it rained

Yes another DNF to add to the books. The breeze looked promising at the start and was meant to build and go South. No build, due East. It did move around from the nice NE to nothing-much E. That doesn't really count ;-(

The Crew

John (Captain), Mark, and Ian, and the three beers.

Course 8

To Rough Rock, Bean Rock, Resolution, and home. Shortened to Resolution.

The Start

Great start. We were on the line at the gun and moving. That was 6:20PM - the same time that the wind started to decline. If all our starts were like that though, I would be happy.

Progress

It soon became apparent that the wind was dying, and so we turned to beer. A cheeky little number with the name <geek> emblazoned on the front - a porter with coconut tones - exceptional. We did have a brief reprieve as we collected a river of wind that took us up through the fleet to Rough Rock Buoy, where it dumped us in a swirling, 0 knots, unsteerable, exasperating hole. By the time we had drifted back into a little breath we had regained a distant last. Ian was jogging on the foredeck to keep warm and we were all soaked to the skin in the light yet persistent rain showers. The love of sailing saw us through...

The Result

Finished - No - at 9:00PM we were at Orakei with Resolution half a mile on. The second beer was a Cobra and the third a Steinlager diluted with tears ;-) Mark got a crew draw prize though, a New World voucher! Not all is lost.

cheers, johnhs
