R12: Top Spot in Final Race

Wind again, and plenty of it! The outlook was looking good as we headed out for the final race of the 2013-2014 Wednesday Night Series for Richmond Yacht Club in Auckland. And unusually, the forecast was correct.

The Crew

John (Captain), Mark, Andre, Ian and Dave.

Course 15

It was back to course 15 - not shortened: From the start line to North Head Buoy (S), Bean Rock Buoy (S), Torpedo Buoy (P), Resolution Buoy (S), Bayswater Buoy (P), to the finish line. 10.5NM

The Start

An average start, but we did have some speed off the line, hanging in well for that first frenzied point of sailing. Unlike a start before us, no contact or shouting - well, not much shouting :-)

Progress

The wind held up and we stayed with our fleet down the harbour, enjoying the chance to trim the boat in some wind, for a change. The helmsman did make a couple of small cock-ups, however the crew were stout in defense and we (they) fought back tenaciously.

The Result

We were pretty sure that we had done well, as our handicap had suffered so severely last year when we were left out to dry on three occasions with a dying evening breeze turning to the stillness of the night. Pretty pleased to end the year on a high note! Number 1 is a good spot on the podium ;-)

cheers and all the best, johnhs
